Dr. Joel Spielman is a board-certified, fellowship-trained orthopedic spine surgeon practicing in Morris County since 1992. He specializes in acute and chronic conditions of the spine.
Dr. Spielman is a magna cum laude graduate of the University of Pennsylvania, where he majored in chemistry and received a minor in Spanish. He was elected to Phi Beta Kappa and received a departmental chemistry award during his undergraduate training.
Dr. Spielman earned his medical degree at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in the Bronx, where he remained to complete his four-year orthopedic surgery residency training at Montefiore Medical Center. Following his residency, Dr. Spielman completed a fellowship in spine surgery at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City. His research in scoliosis during his spine surgery fellowship was published in the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery.
After completing his fellowship training, Dr. Spielman moved to Morris County, New Jersey, where he has been practicing orthopedic surgery ever since. He is a founding partner at Orthopedic Associates of West Jersey.
He takes great pride in educating patients and family members. He carefully explains structural pathology using spine models and available imaging such as X-ray, MRI, or CT studies, in order to create a team-based treatment plan employing nonsurgical and surgical treatment options when necessary.
Dr. Spielman has performed thousands of surgeries over the length of his career. He maintains surgical privileges at St. Clare’s Hospital, where he was section chief of orthopedic surgery for about 10 years, as well as at Morristown Medical Center.
Highly experienced in the operating room, Dr. Spielman views each case as a relief pitcher might and likes to say, “I am as good as my next pitch, not my last one!” In his spare time, he enjoys cycling, tennis, golf, sabre fencing, and cooking using the sous vide technique and Instant Pot.
